Home Runs Hurt Baseball in 8-5 Loss at No. 19 Campbellsville

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – No. 19 Campbellsville outhit the University of Pikeville baseball team 13-9, including home runs by Logan Roberts and David Montoya, to tally an 8-5 win over the Bears on Thursday at HIG Field.

Nelson Muniz collected two hits, scored two runs and was hit by a pitch and Brandon Sewell drove in three runs on two hits to help UPIKE to a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. But it was in that half frame that the Tigers (23-9, 4-1 MSC) scored five runs on six hits to take control of the game for good.

Roberts hit his two-run homer with one out and back-to-back doubles scored another run. With the Bears (19-13, 3-4 MSC) down 5-2, starter Bruce Bell was replaced by Max Hall who gave up the two-run blast by Montoya who was his first batter faced.

UPIKE got one run back in the seventh on a single by Sewell, but that would be it for the game. Campbellsville answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the seventh to end the scoring.

Bell took the loss, dropping to 4-2 after scattering nine hits for six runs with two strikeouts and two walks in 4 2/3 innings. Campbellsville starter Nick Johnston was pulled after four innings in which he allowed just one run but walked three batters. His first reliever, Kirby Broadbent (2-1) took the win after allowing three runs on four hits in the fifth and D.J. Wilson grabbed his sixth save of the season with a shutout 2 2/3 frames.

Campbellsville took a 2-0 lead in the first inning with two straight singles and a fielder's choice hit. Travis Haen got a run back for the Bears with a sac fly in the second and the score stayed at 2-1 until the pivotal fifth.

Matt Peterson and Sewell tallied UPIKE's only extra-base hits with doubles and Jay Vincent also drove in a run on his lone hit.
