Turnovers, big plays plague UPIKE at No. 4 Lindsey Wilson

COLUMBIA, Ky -- Lindsey Wilson set the tone early and didn't let up throughout the night, eventually beating UPIKE, 69-14.

UPIKE appeared to be up to the task on the opening drive taking the ball 43 yards in six plays, before the Blue Raiders forced and recovered a fumble from Xondre Willis. Lindsey Wilson forced three turnovers in the game, two of which were in the first quarter on drives the went into Blue Raider territory.

Things began to snowball from there for the Bears. Lindsey Wilson scored seven plays later for its first touchdown of the game. The Blue Raiders scored five times before Derius Gibson found the end zone on a four-yard run to put UPIKE on the board.

Bears starter Bowen Smith completed nine of 12 passes for 72 yards in the game.

The Bears struggled to find a way to stop the Blue Raider attack that came into the game ranked No. 10 in the nation. Lindsey Wilson outgained UPIKE 661-305, including a 372-138 differential through the air. A majority of that damage was done by Lindsey Wilson quarterback Cameron Dukes who completed 12 of his 15 passes for 281 yards and five touchdowns.

A good portion of the Blue Raiders' offense came in chunks as four different rushers or receivers had plays over fifty yards.

Jeffrey Toney Jr. entered the game late and threw a 11-yard touchdown to Alexander Shelton for Pikeville's second score. Shelton's 56 receiving yards led the team, while Willis led the ground game with 83 rushing yards. Emmett Kersey was the only Bears defender to reach double-digit tackles on the night.

UPIKE returns home next week for its first Saturday home contest at 1:30 p.m. on the 22nd when the Warner Royals come to Hambley Athletic Complex.
