PORTSMOUTH, Ohio -- UPIKE women's soccer couldn't get a winning streak started on Saturday, dropping the conference opener to Shawnee State, 5-0.
It was an especially tough day for the Pikeville Bears (2-9, 0-1 MSC) who couldn't get a shot away in the match, compared to Shawnee's 29 (16 on goal). Charity Collins scored the Shawnee Bears' (3-5-1, 1-0 MSC) first goal in the 16th minute. The match stayed at 1-0 for most of the first half until Christa Harris scored just before the halftime whistle.
Alison Cook scored her first of two goals in the 55th minute and her second came in the 79th.
Erica Burkhardt played the first 78 minutes in goal for UPIKE and stopped 10 of the 15 shots she faced. Nancy Nolasco finished the match and stopped her only shot faced.

UPIKE will try to get its first conference win of the season a week from Saturday when it faces the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 6 in Williamsburg, Ky.
