First quarter deficit downs UPIKE women’s basketball against Lindsey Wilson

COLUMBIA, Ky. -- UPIKE women's basketball fell behind early after a 13-0 run in the first quarter and couldn't quite get back on top of the mountain on Saturday, losing to No. 21 Lindsey Wilson, 76-68.

Outside of that tough three-minute stretch, UPIKE outperformed Lindsey Wilson for a majority of the night. But that timeframe was marred by three turnovers and seven straight missed shots that eventually spelled doom for the Bears.

Despite the heavy haymaker delivered just prior, Pikeville responded well in the second quarter, holding Lindsey Wilson to 21 percent shooting. It was at this time that Brianna Burbridge came alive, scoring UPIKE's first 10 points — and 12 overall — of the quarter. Burbridge turned in another game that has become routine of the Frankfort native of late, scoring a team season high 28 points with 14 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the year, all within the last 15 days. That dynamic second quarter cut a 17-point lead late in the first quarter as low as five points.

UPIKE would continue to climb in the third quarter, coming all the way back to take its first lead since being up 3-2. Alexis Reed scored the first eight points for UPIKE after halftime en route to her first double-digit scoring game in over a month, with 16 points. Lindsey Wilson responded to UPIKE's lead quickly with a 10-2 run, and would eventually reclaim its six point lead going into the final quarter.

That back and forth manner continued to the final buzzer as neither team scored more than five points in a row in the last 10 minutes. With the loss, UPIKE drops to 14-7 and 3-2 in the Mid-South Conference. UPIKE will head back to the south central Kentucky area on Thursday when the Bears face perhaps their strongest test yet at No. 6 Campbellsville.
