CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – UPIKE men's soccer needed some dramatics to get the job done, but secured its first conference win of the season on Wednesday with a 2-1 double overtime win at Thomas More.
The game-winner came in the 102nd minute off the diving head of Jorge Mejia who flicked Oscar Pacheco's 45-yard free kick past the keeper. The goal is the second in as many matches for Mejia, and the third in his career.
Free kicks were the tipping point for Pikeville in the match as its first goal also came off the set piece, this one a 20-yard strike from Eric Bernabeu in the 16th minute.
The match was about as even as possible in the first half as both teams got four shots, and one on goal, but Pikeville made its count on the aforementioned free kick from Bernabeu to lead 1-0 at halftime.
However, Thomas More was able to score in the 86th minute to force the overtime period. The Saints dominated the attacking third in the second half, firing 13 shots, but only five of them were on goal.
