PIKEVILLE, Ky. – UPIKE cast aside any thoughts of an upset with a massive run in the second half to defeat Miami-Hamilton, 92-68.
The Bears went on a 17-4 run with 15 minutes to go to build the lead beyond double-digits for the first time. With the win, UPIKE opens the season 4-0 for the ninth consecutive year.
Miami-Hamilton was able to stick around longer than expected thanks to its intense defense. UPIKE was able to find success inside, as evidenced by their 60.8 field goal percentage on two-point buckets, but MH was able to shut down Pikeville's outside shooting, holding the Bears to just one three-pointer.
Because of that defense, as well as some streaky shooting by the Harriers, the Bears went into halftime with just a 40-34 halftime advantage.
Although three teammates scored more, DeAndre Barton was arguably the most impactful Bear with a near triple-double at 11 points, eight assists, and six rebounds.
Jordan Perry led all scorers with 17 points on 6-12 shooting, mostly inside the arc. Luke Layhew and Xaviar Gaona added 15 and 13 points respectively.
The Bears shot 56 percent after halftime as they figured out how to beat the Harriers defense. Pikeville also stepped up on defense by forcing 16 turnovers after halftime.
Miami-Hamilton was led by the duo of Devan Cook and A'Mon Yisrael who scored 15 and 14 points each.
