PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Pikeville women's basketball was one bounce away from getting a marquee non-conference win, but the buzzer-beater attempt rimmed out as Asbury won 87-86 on Saturday night.
It was UPIKE's most equally balanced game of the season with 10 total lead changes throughout the contest.
The Bears entered the fourth quarter with a four-point lead that quickly grew to seven before Asbury came storming back. The Eagles couldn't miss in the fourth quarter, shooting 53 percent from the floor, including making four of six 3-point attempts.
That shooting led to a 9-0 run for Asbury to take the lead back. After the lead changed hands a few more times, Asbury held a five-point lead leading into the final 90 seconds.
Brianna Burbridge made one of two free throws to cut the lead to four. Burbridge was one of many players to hit a stride offensively in the game, scoring 14 points off the bench on 6-8 shooting with a game-high eight rebounds.
After a stop, Mary Englert made a driving layup to get the score back to a one-possession deficit with 50 seconds remaining. Pikeville committed a foul to give Asbury a short extension on the play clock, but then forced a turnover with 10 seconds to go.
UPIKE found an open shot after the craziness of the turnover, but the 3-point shot from the corner bounced out.
Throughout the game, seemingly every time UPIKE held the momentum, Asbury would sink a 3-pointer to get back within reach. The Eagles hit 10 of their 21 shots from distance in the game.
Especially in the second half, Sierra Feltner did what she could to keep UPIKE afloat. She had a team-high 20 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Kayla Mullins did the same in the first half with four 3-pointers.
