EMERSON, Ga. -- UPIKE baseball had about as tough and heartbreaking of an opening day as possible on Friday, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Point, 7-4 and 3-2.
Game 1
The Bears stumbled out of the gates in the first game of the season, and Pikeville wasn't able to recover, eventually losing 7-4.
Point roughed up UPIKE starter Bruce Bell for four runs in the first inning to build a large early lead. The Skyhawks' first five runners all reached base in the inning. B.J. Johnson got the scoring started with an RBI single and David Torres followed with an RBI single of his own. Jason Fox's sac fly and a fielding error by the Bears contributed the last two runs. The Skyhawks also scored once in the second and twice in the third on three hits and four UPIKE errors.
Dillon O'Grady erased one of those runs when he started the second inning with a triple paired with an Pastor Sanchez RBI groundout. The duo of Tyler Menrath and Luke Lubinicki both got their first of two hits in the game in the third, and Menrath came around to score on a Jay Vincent sac fly.
Bell settled in after the third and only allowed one more hit for the duration of his outing. He still picked up the loss, surrendering four earned runs on seven hits, while striking out three.
Lubinicki brought cut the lead even further in the fifth inning with a two-RBI triple, but that was all that came across for the rest of the game. Justin Dziuba had two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits.
Game 2
The nightcap of the doubleheader was the heartbreaker for the Bears as Pikeville was an out away from getting the win, but then fell in extra innings.
Brady Cappe got through 6.1 innings with only one hit and six strikeouts, but ran out of gas as Point tied the game in the seventh on a Torres RBI groundout and a Kyle Kelly RBI single.
Aaron Hedgecock came in to pitch the eighth and nearly got himself out of a bases loaded jam, but a UPIKE error allowed the walkoff run to come in to score.
Menrath got the scoring started for UPIKE with an RBI groundout in the third and a misplayed ball off the.bat of Lubinicki allowed UPIKE's second run to score.
