UPIKE softball wins fifth and sixth games in a row

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- After taking two wins on Sunday, UPIKE softball is now the winners of six in a row and are above .500 for the first time this season.

Game 1

Pikeville got the day started with a 5-3 win against Rochester College (Mich.). UPIKE connected for 11 hits in the game, its second consecutive game of double-digit hits.

Jordan Gentry, MacKenzie Pawlak, Haley Osborne and Emme Barker each had two hits in the game.

UPIKE got started early with an RBI double from Kelsey White in the first inning. Rochester would then take a short lead after scoring in the top of the second and the fourth, however the Bears would take the lead right back with a three-run fourth inning.

Hannah Absher got the rally started with a singke, then after a sacrifice bunt, Gentry scored Absher with a double off the center field wall. Pawlak then got an extra base hit of her own with a triple into deep right field, which scored Gentry.

After a pitching change, Pawlak scored on a sacrifice fly by White. Those runs would be all Megan Claypoole needed to secure her team-high fourth win on the season. Claypoole earned the win while giving up three runs, but struck out eight batters.

Rochester would trim the UPIKE lead to 5-3 in the fifth, but Barker added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth with a leadoff triple. She later scored on a dropped third strike throw to first.

Game 2

The second game was another offensive outburst for UPIKE when they run-ruled Alice Lloyd in 10-2 in six innings.

Pikeville scored at least one run each in innings two through six to slowly eliminate any hope Alice Lloyd had. The Bears scored twice in the second without recording a hit. Claypoole and Barker reached on an error and a walk and both scored thanks to productive outs and wild pitches.

The Bears did most of their damage in a five-run fifth. Four consecutive singles from White, Osborne, Claypoole and Barker got the rally started and scored two runs. The haymaker blow came on a triple to deep right-center field from Elizabeth Hickey, but she didn't need any time to come home herself as the cutoff throw went awry and Hickey scored herself.

Meanwhile, Hannah Skaggs was dealing all afternoon. The Junior surrendered just three hits all game, did not give up an earned run or a walk, and struck out eight batters.

UPIKE won the game on a walk-off bases loaded walk to enforce the run rule in the sixth inning and win its sixth consecutive game.

UP NEXT

UPIKE softball will head to the beach this week for five games in four days at Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Bears' first game will be at 9:30 a.m. against Lincoln College.
