PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- UPIKE baseball snapped a short losing skid in a big way on Monday, sweeping a doubleheader against Fisher College.
Game 1
UPIKE got the day started with a 9-3 win over the Falcons in the first game of the day.
The Bears started with a stellar outing from Chase McKinney who threw five innings of strong baseball before getting hit a bit in the sixth. Throughout his performance he surrendered just five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.
Offensively, the Bears got started early with a three-run second inning and a two-run third inning. Every UPIKE starter reached base in the game and seven of the nine recorded an RBI.
UPIKE also showed their patience on offense drawing seven total walks on the day.
After Fisher scored three times in the top of the sixth to cut the lead to 5-3, Pikeville delivered the dagger with a four-run inning of their own. Jay Vincent, Anthony Houk and Rodny Rodriquez all recorded multiple hits in the contest.
Justin Dziuba pitched a perfect seventh inning to seal the victory for the Bears.
Game 2
The Bears offense went even more ballistic in the second game, striking for 16 runs in a dominant 16-4 win.
16 runs is the most by the Bears since they scored 17 against Kentucky Christian on March 31 last season.
The Bears also recorded 16 hits with their 16 runs, seven of which were extra-base hits. Dillon O'Grady had a triple and a double, Houk recorded a pair of doubles, while Pastor Sanchez, Luke Hartlage, and Vincent each had a double.
Eight of the nine starters recorded a hit, and five batters recorded multiple RBIs, led by Houk's three. Tyler Menrath and Luke Lubiniecki each had three hits in the ballgame.
Pikeville was propelled to victory with three big innings: a four-run first, a seven-run third, and a four-run third. All seven of the Bears' runs in the third inning and 12 runs overall came with two outs.
Meanwhile, Charlie Cokley picked up his second career win with four innings of two-run ball. He surrendered five hits and struck out three batters.
Jaeden Layne, Jared Iles, and Austin Spada combined for three innings of three-hit relief to close out the game for Pikeville.
