Pair of walk-offs highlight Midway doubleheader sweep

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- In UPIKE's final tune-up before fully entering the MSC season, Pikeville softball had two of its most exciting games of the season, both ending with walk-off wins.

With the two wins, UPIKE now stands at 18-6 on the season and have won 10 games in a row.

Game 1

The day's first game was exciting from start to finish, especially for Bears fans, when Jordan Gentry sent a three-run walkoff home run over the centerfield wall for a 5-2 win.

Gentry's first home run of the year saved what was another strong start for Megan Claypoole, who pitched a five-hit complete game, giving up two runs and striking out five.

UPIKE started the scoring with an RBI single from MacKenzie Pawlak to score Haley Karr in the third inning.

Karr was part of an outstanding game from the bottom of the order. The sixth through ninth batters went a combined 6-for-11 with four runs scored. Claypoole and Hannah Absher, who each had two hits.

Pikeville opened up a two-run lead in the fourth after a pair of singles from Claypoole and Absher coupled with two errors brought in the game's second run.

Midway tied the game in the fifth after a walk, double, and error to start the inning did the Bears in. Claypoole was able to limit the damage after that and set the scene for Gentry's heroics two innings later.

Absher and Karr both reached on an error to start the inning, and two batters later, Gentry ended the game.

Game 2

The nightcap of the doubleheader was a chaotic one that needed extra innings, but the Bears were able to walk away from the rubble with a 9-8 victory in eight innings.

Pikeville took another early 2-0 lead on a 2 RBI single from Kelsey White in the first inning. However, the chaos slowly started in the third.

Midway scored its first run on an error on a bunt that could've been the third out of the inning. That itself wasn't bad, but it was an open of things to come.

The Bears ended up recording seven errors in the game which caused only two of Midway's eight runs to count as earned against Bears starter Hannah Skaggs.

Skaggs pitched all eight innings and only gave up five hits with nine strikeouts.

The Bears would score three runs in the third thanks to some errors from the Eagles to take a 5-1 lead before Midway rattled off five unanswered runs to take a 6-5 lead in the fifth.

Haley Karr hit her second home run of the week in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead right back at 7-6. Despite being a mid-game sub, Karr was the only Bear to have a multi-hit game, although many others reached base multiple times. The freshman outfielder also had three RBIs in the game, including the later walk-off.

Midway would flip the script again with two runs in the top of the seventh to put the pressure on the Bears to score at least once to extend the game.

After the leadoff hitter reached on an error, Elizabeth Hickey delivered with an RBI double to tie the game at 8-8.

International Tie Breaker rules kicked in for the extra innings so each team started the eighth with a runner on second base. Skaggs came through in the clutch to open the inning with a strikeout to keep Midway's runner at second. The Eagles sacrifice bunted the runner to third with their second out, and Skaggs forced a groundout to end the inning with no harm done.

UPIKE was able to sacrifice bunt their runner to third on the first batter and Karr got the job done with a sacrifice fly to right field to end the game and secure the win.

UP NEXT

UPIKE heads straight into Mid-South with a tough challenge: a road series at No. 8 Lindsey Wilson. The Bears will begin the four-game set with a doubleheader Friday starting at 3 p.m. in Columbia, Ky.
