Pawlak’s big day highlights UPIKE softball’s sweep of Bluefield

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- It was an outstanding day for freshman MacKenzie Pawlak as she contributed big time in both games of UPIKE softball's sweep of Bluefield.

Game 1

The first game was much more low scoring than the second, but Megan Claypoole got the job done with her seventh complete game shutout of the season.

Claypoole scattered seven hits across the game, but struck out five and didn't walk a single batter.

Pawlak got her first RBI of seven RBIs on the day in the third on a single after Jordan Gentry's triple just before her.

UPIKE only had six hits in the game but they made them count.

Haley Karr led off the fifth with a single and after a pair of productive outs put her on third base Pawlak got her second RBI to push the lead to 2-0.

The most trouble Claypoole faced all day came in the sixth when the Rams loaded the bases with only one out but she got back to back flyouts to end the threat and close out the game.

Game 2

There was much more offense in the second game, at least for the Bears as they run-ruled the Rams 10-2 in five innings.

Bluefield hit two of its five hits off Hannah Skaggs in the first inning and actually had the lead after a two-run home run.

Pikeville got one of those runs back on an RBI single from Kelsey White. The Bears had the bases loaded but couldn't get anything further.

After the first inning, Skaggs was lights out giving up just three hits and striking out three.

UPIKE took the lead in the second with the first of three three-run innings. The Bears loaded the bases with one out and Pawlak unloaded them with a three-RBI double.

Pikeville connected for another three-run rally in the fourth. Hannah Absher started the inning with a triple and Mercedes Boggs brought her home on a RBI single. UPIKE got its other runs on an fielder's choice with the bases loaded and an error.

Gentry hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to get the game near run-rule territory then Pawlak did the job herself with a two-run home run, her third of the season, to force the run rule in action and send the fans home happy.
