Georgetown pulls away late, downs Pikeville baseball

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- UPIKE baseball's Mid-South Conference season at home ended on a tough note on Monday, losing to No. 17 Georgetown in the series finale, 8-5.

Pikeville got started in grand fashion with a four-run first inning. Georgetown got on the board first with a run, but that lead was erased two batters in by UPIKE.

Jacob Alvarado got the inning started with a single, then scored on a triple by Tyler Menrath. After Luke Lubiniecki was hit by a pitch, Jay Vincent snuck a home run around the foul pole and Pikeville had a 4-1 lead after one inning.

But Georgetown kept attacking and cut the UPIKE lead to 4-3 with two sacrifice flies in the second inning. Both teams were able to chase their opposing starters from the game fairly early. UPIKE got GC starter Chase Ambrose out by the second inning and Georgetown chased Brady Cappe after three innings.

Georgetown tied the game in the fifth inning off a double and single. The Tigers then took the lead two innings later after a single, three walks and a wild pitch plated two runs and gave GC a 6-4 lead.

Pikeville got one of those runs back after Kase Mattingly doubled with two outs and scored on an error. UPIKE was inches away from tying the game in the eighth inning but the runner was cut down at home from the outfield.

Georgetown added two insurance runs in the ninth inning, while the Bears weren't able to score before the end of the game.
