Cappe’s complete game shutout completes series win against Campbellsville

PIKEVILLE, Ky. -- Brady Cappe turned in the best pitching performance by a Bear this season, as UPIKE was able to cap off another Mid-South Conference series win on Sunday with a 6-0 win against Campbellsville.

Cappe pitched all nine innings, throwing 140 pitches in the process. The junior from Canada surrendered just five hits in the game. Only four Tigers reached scoring position in the outstanding outing.

With the win, UPIKE takes home its second consecutive series win and the first against Campbellsville in the eight-year Coach Jim Pitt era. Pikeville now stands in a three-way tie for third place in the MSC with Georgetown and Campbellsville.

Although they only needed one to eventually win, the Bears scored two in the first inning with RBI singles from Luke Lubiniecki and Brendan Halstrom.

UPIKE repeated that effort in the second inning with an RBI knock from Kase Mattingly and a CU error.

Campbellsville came its closest to scoring in the fourth inning when they loaded the bases with two outs, but Halstrom was able to pick a runner off first to end the inning.

Jay Vincent and Tyler Menrath each recorded RBIs in the fifth and sixth inning to close out the scoring.

Cappe's complete game effort is UPIKE's first nine-inning complete game shutout since Bruce Bell did it nearly two years ago on April 29, 2017 in the MSC Tournament.

UP NEXT

The Bears will now embark on a five-game road trip, starting with a midweek doubleheader against Cincinnati Christian on Wednesday in the Queen City, and then a weekend series against Cumberlands (Ky.) on Friday and Saturday.
