MONTREAT, N.C. – Senior goalkeeper Anibal Navarro provided plenty of heroics in Saturday's season opener against Montreat, but the Cavaliers eventually beat the Colombian in double overtime to steal a 1-0 win.
Navarro recorded 19 saves on Saturday, one-upping his previous career high of 18 that he set against the Cavaliers his freshman year.
Montreat scored the contest's only goal in the 103rd minute. The Cavaliers were awarded a free kick off a yellow card and placed the attempt on frame. Navarro made his 19th save, but couldn't corral the rebound and Andre Dinca put home the loose ball for Montreat to seal the win.
Freshman Evan Vanlierop recorded four shots in his first contest in a Bears uniform. He also provided UPIKE's best scoring chance in the game but Jesus Ramos was able to make the save and keep the Bears off the scoreboard.
