UPIKE women’s basketball pulls away late in defensive struggle

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – UPIKE women's basketball held NCAA D-II Bluefield State to eight total points in the second half to erase a big early deficit and win its sixth straight game on Wednesday, 48-32.

Thirty-two points allowed ties the fewest by a UPIKE team since the Bears surrendered just 22 points in January of 2006 against Knoxville College.

Pikeville held BSC to just 25 percent shooting from the field and 7.7 percent from beyond the arc.

However, it started out rough for Pikeville, who couldn't find any momentum on offense in the early going. Frequent trips to the free-throw stripe helped keep the momentum high for the Bears who were down 16-5 at the end of the first quarter.

From that point on, UPIKE only allowed 16 points for the remainder of the game.

Thanks to some intense full-court pressure, UPIKE went on a 10-0 run shortly after the start of the second quarter to cut the lead down to just three points. The Bears forced 26 turnovers in the game, the second-most this season.

The 25-12 difference in points off turnovers provided the difference both on the scoreboard and in the momentum that UPIKE needed to come back.

Brianna Burbridge provided the offensive spark for the Bears off the bench in the second platoon unit. She scored a game-high 17 points and came a rebound away from a double-double in the third straight game.

The junior from Frankfort scored 10 points in the second quarter alone to get the Bears back in striking distance.

UPIKE didn't get its first lead until the third quarter, but by that point, its defense was all the Bears needed.

From the end of the third through almost the end of the fourth, UPIKE went on an 19-2 run to put the game out of reach. UPIKE outscore Bluefield State 29-8 in the second half.

BSC didn't score in the final quarter until there was just 44 seconds left in the game when the Big Blues banked in a long two-pointer.
