Pikeville, KY – UPike men's soccer wrapped up the program's fall portion of the 2020-21 season last night, traveling to Jeffersonville, Indiana to take on Boyce College. The Bears came home with a lopsided victory, defeating the Bulldogs 6-1.
UPIKE wasted no time getting on the score board as Freshman Josh Dluhos opened his collegiate scoring account in the third minute. The Richmond, KY native stepped up and hammered home a penalty kick to make it 1-0 for the Bears. The second goal would not be far behind as two minutes later, Junior
Javier Pozas smashed in what could arguably be the goal of the season. The native of Valencia, Spain hit a volley from the top of the box that rocketed into the upper left corner of the goal.
Sophomore
Jack Burleson got in on the act in both the sixth minute and eleventh minute to make it 4-0 Pikeville in the first 11 minutes of the game. The first goal came in the right place at the right time, as the ball came in off a free kick and bounced right to the left foot of Burleson who calmly tucked it into the lower left corner. His second goal came off a counterattack, where UPike won the ball in their own defensive half and quickly transitioned up the field to find the Tennessee native making a back shoulder run behind the Boyce center back. Burleson was then able to finish, scoring with a kick to the far post out of the keeper's reach.
Freshman
Richard Wohl ended the scoring in the first half, when he too opened his collegiate scoring account by beating the Boyce Goalkeeper from the Penalty spot. The Houston, Texas native filled up the stat sheet, leading the team in shots (4) and Assists (2).
The second half was much more competitive as Boyce was able to tally a goal at the mid-way point on a mistake by the Bears coming in their defensive third of the field. However, Senior
Aaron Aven made sure to end any thoughts of a comeback. Moments after Boyce scored, the Lincoln, England native picked up a pass from Wohl that beat the entire defense. Aven then beat the goalkeeper with a strike from the top of the box.
Freshman Goalkeeper's
Jalen Smith,
Gabriel Torres, and
Wesley Little all split action in the win, with Little earning his first career save.
UPike men's soccer will pick up their season with conference action in the spring of 2021. The Bears are slated to face-off with Shawnee State on Sunday, February 14
th at Bob Amos Complex in Pikeville.
