LEBANON, Tenn. – UPIKE men's basketball saw their win streak come to an end on Thursday, losing to Cumberland on the road, 75-67.
The Phoenix came out strong early and created an uphill battle for the Bears for most of the night. Cumberland went on a 12-2 run across three minutes to build a double-digit lead within the first eight minutes.
Toward the tail end of the first half UPIKE responded with a 9-0 run of their own to help eventually get back within two of CU by halftime.
A large part of that first half burst came from Jazz Parker and JJ Ramey who had 12 and eight points, respectively. Ramey scored his eight points on perfect 4-4 shooting.
Cumberland then rode their two stars in the second half, Jalen Duke and DeMari Davis. Both scored 10 points each in the second half. UPIKE held the Phoenix to 40 percent shooting in the second half, but gave up 12 offensive rebounds after halftime alone.
CU's 14 offensive rebounds turned into 14 second chance points in the game.
Despite all of this, UPIKE was in striking distance or the lead for most of the second half. There were 13 total lead changes in the game, with the majority in the second half.
Cumberland held the Bears scoreless for the final 2:53 of the game and went on an 8-0 run in the process to secure the win.
