UPIKE softball splits pair of pitcher’s duels with WVU Tech

PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Hits were few and far between for both UPIKE and West Virginia Tech softball on Thursday as the two teams split a doubleheader, both of which were 2-1 decisions.

Game 1 – UPIKE wins 2-1

Senior pitcher Hannah Skaggs turned in another incredible performance to start the year in the day's first game.

She pitched a complete game in her winning effort, giving up just five hits and one run while striking out 12. Skaggs now has 19 strikeouts in just two starts this season.

The game was scoreless for the first four and a half innings until Megan Claypoole hit her first home run of the season to lead off the Pikeville fifth inning.

A hit batter, walk, and sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position with just one out and another run scored on an RBI groundout by Alysha Bolling.

The only blemish on the record for Skaggs came in the sixth when a single and double scored a run for the Golden Bears.

Game 2 – WVU Tech wins 2-1

The day's second game was essentially the inverse of the first as the Bears just couldn't find a way to get runners on.

Claypoole started the second game in the circle for the Bears and had a good outing herself. She allowed just two hits in the entire ballgame with 10 strikeouts, but was hurt by four walks.

UPIKE had a lead from the first batter of the game though as Bolling led the game of with an inside the park home run that crept just inside the first base foul line and rolled into the corner of the field.

WVU Tech scored each of their two runs by capitalizing on leadoff walks. In the third inning, a leadoff walk was followed by a stolen base, sacrifice bunt and an error to tie the score at one.

The game stayed tied until the final inning where a leadoff walk, sacrifice bunt, and single gave the Golden Bears the lead.

UPIKE had a chance in the bottom of the inning with a two-out rally with a walk and bunt single, but nothing came of it for the Bears.

UP NEXT

UPIKE will host a tri-match on Saturday as the Bears will face Rochester University at 11:00 a.m. and then face Alice Lloyd at 3:00 p.m., all at Paul Butcher Field.
