BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – The season for UPIKE women's basketball came to an unfortunate close on Friday as the Bears lost to Thomas More in the MSC Tournament quarterfinals, 61-54.
Thomas More cranked up the defensive intensity big time after halftime to eliminate a 14-point halftime lead.
UPIKE built that lead in nearly one fell swoop. Thomas More led 14-7 with 4:07 left in the first quarter before the Bears went on a 17-0 run well into the second quarter.
The Bears allowed four points in the entire second quarter, holding the Saints to 16 percent shooting on the floor.
A majority of the UPIKE offense in the game came from the hands of Brianna Burbridge and Sierra Feltner, who were the Bears two double-figure scorers with 19 and 13 points, respectively.
TMU essentially flipped the script in the third quarter, outscoring Pikeville 21-7 to tie the game heading into the third quarter. While the Saints still didn't boast a great shooting percentage, a pair of 3-pointers from Courtney Hurst helped spark the rally.
Hurst was one of three Saints in double figures, joined by Kaela Saner and Zoie Barth.
Thomas More pulled away late thanks to its frequent trips to the free-throw stripe. After shooting just one free throw in the first half, the Saints shot 20 in the second, making 15.
UPIKE ends its season at 16-15 overall after the loss.
