LEBANON, Tenn. – The University of Pikeville opened the fourth quarter with an 18-0 explosion to knock off Cumberland University 62-50 on Saturday afternoon.
Junior guard
Alexis Reed nailed five three-point baskets and finished with a game-high 21 points to lead the way. Reed, a second-generation Bear from Maysville, was 5-of-8 from behind the arc. She led three Bears in double figures as they picked up the road win in Mid-South Conference play.
UPike (10-5, 6-5 in the MSC) trailed early, giving the Phoenix 11 unanswered points in the first period. Pikeville scored the first and last basket of the period and was behind 11-4 after one. Cumberland led 27-20 at the half.
Cumberland (2-7, 1-7) pushed its lead to 11 two times in the third period, including at 33-22 on a jumper by Faith Eubank with 6:24 left in the frame.
From there the Bears got back in the game thanks to scoring 15 of the next 16 points to take the lead. It was a two-person show, with senior
Brianna Burbridge getting things started with three straight layups to cut the deficit to five, Reed then nailed three straight three pointers, including one with 3:27 left to tie the game and another 15 seconds later to put her team on top 37-34.
It was the first lead for the Bears since the first bucket of the game, but the Phoenix battled back, and when Abby Morgan sank a jumper with two seconds left in the frame, they led 43-42 heading into the final period.
The fourth quarter, however, was all UPike. The Bears scored the quarter's first 18 points to take complete command.
Freshman
Julia Parker gave the Bears the lead for good on a three with 9:02 to play, and then hit another jump shot. Senior
Sierra Feltner followed with a three and a basket in the paint before Parker scored eight in a row, sandwiching two more threes around two free throws.
The final triple, coming with 4:05 to play, had the Bears on top 60-43.
Parker, who hadn't scored when the fourth period began, had all 13 of her markers in the 18-point run. She and Reed helped the Bears to a 36-15 scoring advantage off the bench.
Burbridge followed with 11 and four rebounds.
Cumberland, which shot only 37.7 percent from the field, got 12 points from junior Brittany Miller. Junior Sydnie Ward followed with nine.
Pikeville had a 45-32 advantage on the glass, thanks to nine rebounds by freshman
Morgan Stamper and eight more by Feltner.
The Bears are scheduled to return to action on Monday night when they entertain Georgetown College. That game is slated for a 5:30 p.m. tip at Appalachian Wireless Arena.
Cumberland visits No. 8 Thomas More on Thursday afternoon.
