Bears Split Tri-Match At Bluefield State

Bluefield, WV – The University of Pikeville women's volleyball team split their doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Bluefield State College. The Bears took down Calumet College of St. Joseph in their opener Saturday, 3-1 before dropping the nightcap against Bluefield State, 1-3.

Hunter Clewis led the way for the Bears with 27 kills over the two matches, including a season-high tying 17 kills against Calumet. She also had 30 total digs and 16 of those came against Bluefield State. Leigh Johnson dished out 59 assists, with 32 coming against Calumet.

The Bears now move to 4-20 this season overall, having won two of their last three matches. They return to Mid-South Conference action on Tuesday evening against University of the Cumberlands.

The Bears and Crimson Wave played three close sets in their match, but UPIKE was able to take the victory. The Bears hit over .200 in a pair of sets, swinging .235 in set one and .206 in set three.

A trio of Bears recorded 10 or more digs in the contest, with Clewis having 14, Cheyenne Martinez had 13 and Johnson having 10. Oksana Vucetic also continued her great play at the net in this one, recording five blocks (3 solo, 2 assist), giving her 12 total blocks over two matches. This win gave UPIKE two victories in a row heading into their second match.

Bluefield State defeats Pikeville – 3-1 (26-24, 19-25, 27-25, 25-21)
Similar to the first match, the Bears and Big Blue played tough through all four sets. Two of the sets went to overtime, as the Bears unfortunately dropped the match.

Yeryvel Catala led the way with 11 kills while Clewis added 10. Johnson put together another 27-assist performance while four players in this match had 10 or more digs. As mentioned, Clewis had 16, Kiara Warrens had 15, Johnson had 13, and Mikela Cook recorded 10.

What's Up Next
The Bears take on University of the Cumberlands Tuesday night in the UPIKE Gym in MSC action. The last time these teams met was on Sep. 25 when Cumberlands took the match 3-0.
