Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Impressive Shooting Pushes Bears Past Simmons in Commanding Victory

Pikeville, KY - UPIKE men's basketball blew past Simmons College of Kentucky Tuesday night by a final score of 110-41. The Bears hit the brand-new floor of Appalachian Wireless Arena for the first time, setting the tone for the season to come with excellent ball distribution and efficiency.

From the floor the Bears shot an impressive 67% which is the highest in a single game since a win over Akron-Wayne in December of 2019. The points were abundant from range and in the paint as the Bears drilled 16 shots from three and tallied 46 points in the paint.

"We challenged our guys to come out with great energy and effort tonight and I think we got that from them." said Head Coach Tigh Compton

Perhaps most impressive was the way UPIKE spread the ball around, shown by four Bears in double digits. Each player scored for the Bears, led by Taeron Hogg who had a breakout game going 6-9 from the floor to finish with 15 points, also pulling in six rebounds.

Kevin Bishop II showcased his athleticism and ability to drive to the basket, connecting on several tough buckets to finish with 13 points. Bishop shot a clean 6-7 from the floor and added five rebounds. Korbin Spencer finished with 10 points and five rebounds but most impressive was his nine assists.

Simmons held a single lead in the contest, splashing a three in the first minute to go up 3-0 before Christian Sweazie leveled the field with a three on the next possession. From there, the pace gradually increased until around the eight minute mark when the Bears launched a 12-0 run that pushed them out to a 28-12 lead with 6:26 to play in the opening half.

The Bears allowed Simmons just 6 points the remainder of the half while they dropped 24 points, capped off by a statement dunk by Hogg in the final seconds.

Half two was much of the same for the Bears who put several rotations on the floor. The period was dominated by Bishop II who scored all 13 of his points in the 20 minute span. UPIKE shot 71.9 % from deep in the second half, thanks in part to Taevon Horton, Noel Kintz, and Spencer hitting a pair each.

Coach Compton was pleased with his unit's overall performance in the win, "We have to do a better job of valuing the basketball, said Compton, "but overall I have been very happy with our willingness to share the basketball and play together."

The Bears are set for their first road trip of the season this weekend as they head to Huntington, WV to take on Marshall University in exhibition play. Tip-off between the Bears and Herd is slated for 2PM.
