Pikeville, KY – Women's basketball found themselves locked in yet another thriller Saturday afternoon, losing a heartbreaker to Georgetown 80-78. The Bears carried a lead into the final two minutes but Georgetown connected on a layup with 0:05 to seal the win.
As a team the Bears went 29-75 from the field and 9-21 from three, shooting a solid 73% from the free throw line. The Tigers finished with a 45% clip from the field, 36.8% from deep, and 79.2% from the charity stripe. UPIKE edged Georgetown in the rebounding column with 37 boards to the Tigers 34.
Mary Englert played a tough 33 minutes, leading the Bears with 23 points and 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double effort. The senior splashed a season-high four three-pointers and dished out five assists. The Bears outscored the Tigers 21-16 in the second quarter, with Englert dropping in 13 points in the period.
Both
Bailey Frazier and LeeAnna McNulty combined for 20 points, dropping 10 a piece. Frazier connected on a pair of threes and went a perfect 2-2 from the free throw line while McNulty went 4-8 from the floor and dominated the glass, pulling in five rebounds.
Sierra Feltner put 32 minutes, managing eight points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
The Tigers opened the contest on a 8-3 run that lasted two and a half minutes before Englert pulled up a trey that made it a one possession game with 6:42 to go. Georgetown would stretch the lead to as much as six but threes by
Alexis Reed and Feltner put the Bears within reach headed into the final two minutes of the period.
UPIKE owned the second period after a 1:15 went by, launching a 7-0 run that cleared the nine-point Tiger lead and brought the Bears within two with 7:32 to go. With just over 7:00 to play, Frazier drained a three that gave the Bears their first lead of the ballgame. The Tigers roared back to take the lead but the Bears kept the foot on the pedal, matching Georgetown 37-37 headed into the break.
The third saw the Bears hold the lead until just over 4:00 on the clock when a pair of free throws gave Georgetown their first lead of the second half. The teams went back and forth for the next three minutes, tying twice, but it was Georgetown that held a 59-57 lead headed into the final period.
The largest lead by either team in the fourth was held by UPIKE, holding a 75-71 advantage with 1:46 left to play. Georgetown connected on a clutch three at 1:40 to make it a one possession ballgame before taking the lead seconds later. Frazier came through with a big three to answer, making it 78-76 Bears with 30 seconds to go. The Tigers clutched up once more, hitting back to back layups, holding the Bears on their last chance to score.
The loss sets the Bears back to 2-2 after opening the conference stretch 0-2. The Bears look to bounce back next Friday, November 26
th in Montgomery, AL as they take on Faulkner.
