Marietta, GA – The University of Pikeville women's basketball team dropped a tough road contest Thursday evening to the Life University Running Eagles, 69-67.
UPIKE trailed by as many as 11 in the game and found themselves down 63-52 with 6:14 to play but clawed their way back and gave themselves a chance to win. Unfortunately, a last-second Eagles layup sealed the win for Life.
Mary Englert scored a team-high 19 points while
Sierra Feltner scored a season-high 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to secure her second double-double as a Bear.
Morgan Stamper also added 15 points and snatched 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double this season and sixth of her career.
The Bears fall to 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the Mid-South Conference as all four losses have been by four points or less.
Steady Eagles Lead
The Bears led by as many as five in the first quarter before the Running Eagles took the lead for good in the second period and held onto the momentum. Life led 23-22 before producing a 9-2 run to get some breathing room at 32-24. They would head into the halftime break up 40-31.
Storming Back
The Running Eagles never surrendered the lead in the third quarter and held a 53-50 lead heading into the final frame.
As mentioned, after a 10-2 flurry, they grabbed a comfortable 63-52 lead with just over six minutes to play in the contest. However, UPIKE wasn't out of it. Four Feltner points fueled an 8-0 run to get the Bears right back into it at 63-60 with 3:14 to play.
They would continue to pressure the Running Eagles until the game was eventually tied at 67-67. However, a late turnover and an Eagles bucket secured the 69-67 defeat.
What's Up Next
The Bears return to the floor Saturday afternoon in Pulaski, Tennessee where they take on the University of Tennessee-Southern Firehawks at 3:00 p.m. ET. These two teams last met on January 23rd of this year as UPIKE won 84-77 in Pikeville.
