Pikeville, KY – UPIKE soccer took the pitch against Shawnee State on Thursday evening, in what became a gritty showdown that lasted 110 minutes. When the dust settled, neither team claimed the advantage and UPIKE recorded their first draw of the season.
Prior to Thursday's matchup the two teams have had a history of playing it close, with Shawnee edging UPIKE 3-2 in their most recent matchup in 2019. Both teams played with an intensity that made for an exciting matchup in the Bears home opener.
Scoring wise for UPIKE it was
Richard Wohl and
Favio Govea who found net for the Bears. After trailing 1-0 for the final 20 minutes of the first, UPIKE finally got on the board via a shot from
Richard Wohl to tie the game.
Just seven minutes later on an inbound throw in the midfield,
Jeinner Farfan headed an excellent pass to junior stud
Favio Govea who landed an acrobatic bicycle kick into the net to take the lead. The goal is the third of the season for Govea, leading the team in points and goals.
The Bears battled through the backend of the second period before Kevin de Lange came up big for SSU, tying the game at 2-2 with 4:16 remaining. UPIKE posited excellent defensive play in the final minutes but were unsuccesfull on the attack, sending the game into overtime.
In the first OT, the Bears were able to get one shot off via
Billy Quiteno but it missed high and the clock hit zero once again. The second sudden death OT was highlighted by a save in the final two minutes by goalkeeper
Jalen Smith who made a nice grab in the waning minutes to keep the game tied. Niether team struck again and after two overtimes, the teams went home with a tie.
UPIKE men's soccer returns to Bob Amos on Sunday, March 14
th to take on University of the Cumberlands in MSC action. The game is set to begin at 4:30 PM and will be streamed live via the UPIKE Sports Network.
