Pikeville, KY – UPIKE football snagged their first conference win against Campebellsville on Friday night, stifling the Saints' comeback in the final minutes of the fourth to secure the 35-27 victory.
Trevon Wofford led the attack for the Bears, showcasing a more controlled aerial assault that racked up 164 yards and a career high three touchdowns. Wofford completed 9 of 21 attempts including a 57 yarder. Wofford also accumulated 54 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
Alexander Shelton managed 55 yards on 18 carries, recording his second touchdown of the season. As a team, the Bears averaged 3.7 yards per carry but grinded out 173 total yards on the ground in the effort. Thomas More barely edged the Bears in total offense, finishing with 415 to the Bears 337.
Thomas More struck first to lead 7-0 with 11:22 but UPIKE would answer three minutes later after marching down the field with a six play, 31-yard drive that was capped by a well-placed pass from Wofford to
Randy Ramanan resulting in a 16-yard touchdown. The touchdown was the first of the season for Ramanan.
Alex Shelton charged into the endzone with 12 minutes left in the third quarter, wrapping up a 12 play, 58-yard drive as the Bears took their first lead of the game. With 2:48 left in the fourth quarter the Bears once again claimed the lead with a 49-yard pass snagged by
Damian Sutton.
Thomas More didn't lay down though and would score in the final two minutes, before successfully recovering an onside kick with just 0:50 to go. The Saints marched 38 yards to the UPIKE 11 but were unable to convert after burning their timeouts.
After the win, UPIKE moves to 1-2 on the season with a matchup against Cumberland on the horizon. The Bears will take on the Phoenix for homecoming weekend next Friday, with kickoff set for 1:30 pm.
