New Albany, IN – UPIKE baseball clubbed 13 hits on Tuesday afternoon, matching their season high in a game against (11) Indiana University Southeast. The Bears hung eight runs against the Grenadiers but gave up the lead in the final frame, falling just short of the upset.
The Bears came alive offensively in New Albany with six clubbing multiple hits led by
Tyler Maynard and
Noah Helton who each tagged two doubles. Helton's second hit of the came at a critical point – with two runners on in the top of the eighth in a tied ballgame. The center-fielder sent a shot to deep right-center to take the lead.
Helton's lead claiming hit was made possible two at-bats prior by
Cam Marushi who stepped up to the plate and blasted a two-run homer over the fence in left field on the first pitch. The home run was the second of the season for Marushi, tying
Demarco Miller for the most on the team this season.
The Bears struck first in the contest via Marushi's first hit of the game which scored Darius Bomer. The Grenadiers would take the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring a pair of runs, adding an insurance run an inning later.
UPIKE entered the eighth trailing 5-3 before tallying a trio of hits, scoring four runs to take the 7-5 lead heading into the homestretch. The Bears struggled on the mound in the bottom half of the eighth while the Grenadiers took advantage of stolen bases and managed a two RBI triple. It was 10-7 as UPIKE had its last chance to plate three runs but they would only get one via an RBI single from Bello, scoring Maynard who doubled earlier in the inning.
UPIKE baseball is back on the diamond on Friday, March 19
th as they head to Lawrenceville, GA for a two day bout with (3) Georgia Gwinnett.
