Pikeville, KY – UPIKE men's soccer took on Campbellsville on Sunday afternoon, falling 9-0 to the Tigers. The game was senior day for the Bears as they honored
Rodny Rodriguez,
Billy Quiteno,
Aaron Aven, and
Hunter Adams for their contributions to the program.
On the pitch (RV) Campbellsville was relentless in their attack, sending 17 shots in the first period.
Jalen Smith was busy in goal for the Bears, managing seven saves in the first 45 minutes.
The Bears shot just three times in the first period, beginning with
Javier Pozas who missed wide just two minutes into the contest. UPIKE threatened once again with under 20 minutes to go, playing a considerable sequence in the attacking end.
Jeinner Farfan and
Richard Wohl both fired within the same minute but both were unsuccessful. Farfan earned a shot on goal after his ball was saved by the Tigers' keeper.
After the first quarter, UPIKE trailed 5-0 but opened with high energy in the second. The Bears held Campbellsville off for 10 minutes but the Tigers would strike twice in the sixth, eleventh, and thirteenth minute. Campbellsville put one last ball in the net with 10:54 to go to seal the 9-0 win.
At halftime, the four Bears mentioned earlier received senior posters and posed for pictures with family alongside teammates and coaches.
UPIKE's
Billy Quiteno is in his last season with the Bears, rounding out the end of a four year stint that included seven career goals and over 60 games played. The talented Mid-Fielder from El Salvador is a three year team captain and is obtaining his degree in Business and Sport Management in the Spring of 2021. Quiteno is decorated academically, boasting five semesters on the president's list, a dean's list selection, two MSC Academic All-Conference awards and in 2019 was named an NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athlete.
Next is senior from Olive Hill, KY –
Hunter Adams. Like Quiteno, Adams has given four years to UPIKE men's soccer as a mid-fielder. Adams has appeared in 45 games in his career and tallied his first career goal in 2019. A Sports Management major, Adams plans to pursue a career in athletic administration as an athletic director at his native high school. Adams has been named to the MSC All-Academic list twice and has collected two president's and three dean's list honors.
From Lincoln, England, senior
Aaron Aven is one of the most animated and outspoken members of UPIKE's roster. Aven joined the program in 2017 and has since appeared in 60 contests for the Bears, scoring eight goals including a pair of game winners. He majors in Computer Science at UPIKE with aspirations to work in the United States while traveling the US and abroad. A three-time All-MSC Academic selectee, Aven has been honored for his work in the classroom with a dean's list appearance in the fall of 2020.
UPIKE' final senior is
Rodny Rodriguez from Termero, Venezuela. Rodriguez joined the program this season and has played in all 10 games, starting in five. A computer science major, Rodriguez plans to work as a software developer. The forward is also interested in learning two new languages and spend more time with his family.
The Bears return to the pitch for their final match of the season on Tuesday, March 28
th at home against Lindsey Wilson. Kick-off at Bob Amos Park is slated for 12PM.
