Pikeville, KY – UPIKE softball moves to 3-7 on the season after splitting an out of conference double header with Alice Lloyd College on Monday afternoon. UPIKE hit a single-game season high nine hits in game one, winning 5-1 before dropping game two 6-5.

Katelyn Byrd and
Erin Bolen led the Bears at the plate in game one, both connecting for a pair of hits. Bolen's line included a double which scored two, also adding a run scored.
Brynna Souels went 1-3 with an RBI in the bottom of the second inning.
Zoe Ingram,
Alyssa Franklin, Haley Osbourne, and
Sophie Kluesner also recorded hits in the contest, Osbourne's coming on a double to deep left center in the bottom of the sixth.
Neither team scored in the first frame but it was UPIKE who would strike first via Bolen who scored on Souels shot to center field after singling herself earlier in the inning. The Bears were scoreless until the fifth inning, seeing Alice Lloyd tye the game at 1-1 in the third. UPIKE managed three hits in the fifth, scoring four runs to take the 5-1 lead they would hold on to secure the win.
Senior
Megan Claypoole went seven innings complete in the circle, allowing a single run on three hits and notching a season high 11 strikeouts. Claypoole records her second win of the season in her best performance of 2021.

The Bears matched their game one hit total with nine in game two but fell victim to strong fifth and seventh inning stretches from Alice Lloyd.
Katelyn Byrd was a bright spot for UPIKE, busting three hits, an RBI and scoring a run.
Sophie Kluesner was the other Bear with a multi-hit performance, knocking a pair of hits, an RBI, and added a run scored in the first frame. Haley Osbourne recorded her second double of the season in the fourth inning, smashing a shot to deep right-center that scored
Megan Nethercutt.
The Bears got on top first, scoring a single run in the first by way of an RBI single from Byrd that scored Kluesner. UPIKE would go up 3-1 in the fourth before Alice Lloyd managed their best inning of the day in the fifth, sending four hits and scoring three.
The Eagles took their first lead of the day in the sixth, extending their lead to 6-3 in the top of the seventh. The Bears fought in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a pair of runs but would leave the tying run on base to fall 6-5.
Mattea Ware got the start for UPIKE and went six and a third, allowing five runs (three earned) on nine hits. Ware was relieved by
Macy Jones in the fifth, allowing three hits before Ware was put back in the circle.
The Bears will return to action tomorrow, March 8
th at Paul Butcher Field for a double-header against Asbury with first pitch slated for 1 PM. The matchup between the Bears and Eagles will be live streamed via the UPIKE Sports Network.
