Bowling Green, KY – The University of Pikeville Bears dropped the first match of their doubleheader Saturday morning at the Vette City Classic against Point University 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-9). The Bears were led by Hunter Clewis (11 kills) and Cheyenne Martinez (18 assists, nine digs) in the contest.

In their afternoon tilt, UPIKE dropped their final match of the tournament 3-0 to Loyola University New Orleans. The Bears were led by Hunter Clewis with nine kills, Leigh Johnson with seven digs and Cheyenne Martinez with 18 assists.

Match One: Point University defeats Pikeville 3-0 (27-25, 25-18, 25-9)
Both teams traded points throughout set one with UPIKE holding a slim 11-9 lead before the Skyhawks used a 6-1 run to take a 15-12 lead. The lead became 17-14 before the Bears used a 5-0 flurry to take a 19-17 lead. Daniela Hernandez fueled the run with two aces. The two teams battled until the Skyhawks ultimately came away with the 27-25 set win to go up 1-0.

Set two was tied at 13-13 before a 5-1 Point run made it 18-14 and proved to be the difference in the set. The Bears couldn't complete the comeback as they fell down 2-0 in the match.

Set three was all Skyhawks from the very start as they took a quick 12-3 lead. Two Hunter Clewis aces along with a Clewis kill gave the Bears some hope with a 5-0 spurt to make it 12-8, but it didn't prove to be enough. The Skyhawks finished the match on a 13-1 run to finish the sweep with a 25-9 set win.

Match Two: Loyola University New Orleans Defeats Pikeville 3-0 (25-15, 25-15, 25-17)
The Wolf Pack jumped out to a 7-2 lead in set one before the Bears used a 6-3 run to make it 10-8. Four kills by three different Bears started the rally. However, Loyola rallied back with an 8-4 run of their own to make it 18-12 and put UPIKE out of reach. The Bears would drop the first set 25-15.

The Wolf Pack grabbed a commanding 13-7 lead in set two they would never relinquish en route to an identical 25-15 set win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

It was 8-2 Loyola early on in set three before two kills from Megan Frazier and one from Clewis helped the Bears to a 4-0 run and 8-6 deficit. The Bears got to within one point at 15-14 after a Leigh Johnson ace but couldn't tie the set. A 5-0 Loyola run would give them a 20-14 lead that the Bears couldn't come back from as they dropped the final set 25-17 and the match 3-0.

What's Up Next
After falling to 0-4 on the season, UPIKE will look for their first win next Saturday at home in Pikeville where they host West Virginia Tech (2:00 p.m.) and Midway University (4:00 p.m.) for a doubleheader.
