Holmes Hat Trick Leads Bears Over Midway

Midway, KY – The University of Pikeville women's soccer team picked up their second victory of the 2021 season Tuesday afternoon against the Midway University Eagles, 3-2. Senior Mya Holmes led the Bears offense with a hat trick, the first of her career.

UPIKE dominated offensively in the contest, taking 21 shots, with 13 coming on goal. Christin Mitchell and Kylie Maynard both recorded their first assists of the season. This win moves Pikeville to 2-1 this season as they travel to Oakwood University Saturday night for their next game at 7:30 p.m.

Bears Strike First
In the 29th minute, after UPIKE had already put two shots on goal, a through ball found the foot of Mya Holmes who sent the ball into the back of the net to put the Bears up 1-0.

Midway quickly answered with a goal on a free kick to tie the game up at 1-1, which is where it stood at the half.

Taking the Lead
In the 51st minute, Holmes broke the tie with a goal off an assist from Christin Mitchell to give the Bears a 2-1 lead, a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.

They continued to put pressure on the Eagles keeper, with three more shots over the next 13 minutes. Holmes then put a bow on her hat trick in the 65th minute off an assist from Kylie Maynard to give UPIKE some breathing room at 3-1.

They produced four more shots in the game, before a late Midway goal made the final score 3-2.

Inside the Box Score
As mentioned this is Holmes first hat trick of her career and the first time she has scored multiple goals in a game since Sep. 29, 2019 against Oakland City University (UPIKE won 2-0). It's the first hat trick for the Bears since Emily Branham accomplished the feat against Welch College on Oct. 14, 2019.

The 21 shots are the most for UPIKE since they took 23 against Welch College on Oct. 14, 2019. The 13 shots on goal are the most since they had 19 shots on frame in the same contest against Welch.

What's Up Next
As mentioned, UPIKE will travel to Huntsville, Alabama on Saturday, Sep. 11 for a matchup against Oakwood University at 7:30 p.m.
