Pikeville, KY – UPIKE women's basketball fell to UT-Southern 63-57 Thursday afternoon in a physical matchup at Appalachian Wireless Arena. The Bears lose their second straight despite mounting a fourth quarter comeback effort.
Morgan Stamper showed out once again, recording her 12
th double-double of the season and leading the Bears with 19 points. The sophomore also added 14 rebounds including an impressive 11 off the offensive glass.
Alexis Reed and
Leeanna Mcnulty both dropped in 13 points.
The Bears shot just 31% from the field, mostly due to a quiet second half shooting wise which saw UPIKE hit just 4-17 in the third quarter. One highlight for the Bears was in the rebound column, snagging 42 rebounds featuring 22 offensive boards.
Thanks to relentless offensive rebounding, the Bears dominated the second chance points category with 15. Coach Williams' squad also forced 14 turnovers out of the Firehawks that lead to 10 points.
UPIKE led early in the first quarter, opening the game with a 6-0 run scored completely by
Morgan Stamper. UT-Southern stole the lead with just under five minutes to play in the quarter to go up 12-10 after a quick three followed by a layup. McNulty led the attack to end the period as the freshman scored four straight to tie the game at 16.
Reed splashed a three and a layup in the opening sequence of the second to claim the lead for UPIKE, scoring seven total points in a stretch that lasted 2:30. The Firehawks answered with a 7-0 run spanning three minutes to take a 30-23 lead with 2:53 left in the half. At the half the Bears trailed 34-30.
A 6-0 run sparked for UT-Southern to open the second half, extending their lead to six to make it 40-34. UPIKE's offense was stifled in the third, allowing the Firehawks to build as much as a 12 point lead which they would carry into the final period.
The Bears managed to bring the game within single digits in the last two minutes of the fourth led by shots from Reed, Stamper, and McNulty, but the free throw battle was won by UT-Southern who hit six of eight from the line in the final minute.
UPIKE women's basketball returns to Appalachian Wireless Arena on Saturday, January 22
nd for another MSC duel with Life University. Tip-off between the Bears and Running Eagles is slated for 2PM.
