Georgetown, Ky. – Bears volleyball suffered a sweep at the hands of Georgetown Saturday afternoon, recording scores of 18, 19, and 17.
The Bears were led by
Cheyenne Martinez who recorded a season high eight kills in the match. Martinez also finished with five assists and a pair of digs.
Leigh Johnson notched 11 assists to lead the Bears while
Mikela Cook's 11 digs led the team.
The first set was closely contested from the early going, seeing the Bears take a 6-5 lead after a pair of Tigers attack errors. Minutes later, Georgetown scored four unanswered to take an 11-7 advantage, due in part to three attacking errors by the Bears. The Bears wouldn't come closer than within three the remainder of the set.
Georgetown roared to an 8-3 lead in set number two, going up by as much as 10 in the set. With Georgetown nursing a 18-7 lead, the Bears caught fire for five straight points by way of kills from Martinez and
Oksana Vucetic and a service ace from Johnson. Johnson struck again to make it 23-18 later in the match but Georgetown was able to hold on to secure the 25-19 victory.
Much like set one, UPIKE battled in the third set which featured a back and forth that led to a 6-6 tie. Georgetown finally caught momentum as they scored four straight, capitalizing on a pair of UPIKE errors and a service ace. After an
Alex Van Dyke kill, UPIKE was back within two making it a 12-10 Tigers lead before another four-point scoring streak deflated the Bears' momentum. Despite a three-point run from UPIKE that included back-to-back service aces from Cook, the Tigers held strong to take the 25-17 win.
