Bridgeport, W.Va. - After eight consecutive Mid-South Conference contests, the UPIKE Bears hit the road for their first non-conference matchup since September 16th to face the Salem University Tigers. The Bears were defeated by the Tigers by a final count of 5-1.
Bears goalkeeper Adam Di Millo made his fourteenth start of the season today and was welcomed with an early onslaught of Tiger shots. Di Millo faced five shots in the first 21 minutes and turned them all away. Di Millo and the Bears' defense were able to weather the Tigers storm midway through the first half which led to the offense getting some chances.
With the Bears threatening, Richard Wohl connected with Paul Kueltz in the 33' to put the Bears up 1-0. Kueltz's first-half tally is the fifth of the season for the young freshman from Dusseldorf, Germany. With the goal, Kueltz is now the team leader in goals.
After holding the Tigers scoreless through the first 45, the Tigers broke through in the 47' to level the score at 1-1. Salem continued to up the pressure on the Bears and scored a pair of goals in the 65' and 67' to go up 3-1 but did not stop there. The Tigers went up 4-1 in the 76' then added another goal in the 88' and took the match 5-1.
Following today's loss UPIKE's record drops to 4-11-1 (0-7-1 MSC). After a short break in Mid-South play, the Bears will pick up conference play again against Thomas More on Saturday.
