Portsmouth, Ohio - The University of Pikeville traveled north to take on Shawnee State in the battle of the Bears and were defeated 3-0 on Tuesday night.
Cheyenne Martinez got the Bears on the board in the first set with back-to-back kills to tie the score at 2-2. The two teams were neck-and-neck, with Shawnee leading 14-11 midway through the first. Shawnee then went on a big run and UPIKE would only score one more point and lost the first set.
Shawnee State jumped all over UPIKE in the second set and Shawnee took a 2-0 match lead. Cheyenne Martinez recorded two early kills in the third set and the score was 4-3. Martinez would add another kill in the third, but UPIKE fell short and lost the set and the match.
Genesis Santiago Melendez recorded a season-high 13 digs to lead UPIKE's defense. Cheyenne Martinez recorded a season-high nine kills. Martinez was second on the team in digs (10) and also had three assists tonight. Leigh Johnson led UPIKE in the assist category, recording nine on the night.
Up next for the Bears is a trip up north for a matchup with Rio Grande University on Halloween night.
