Pikeville, Ky. - The University of Pikeville Bears were defeated 3-0 by the University of Tennessee-Southern Firehawks at the UPIKE Gym today.
The Firehawks jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set, then the Bears responded with three points of their own. Cheyenne Martinez scored two of those three points with a kill for UPIKE's first point and a service ace to cut the UT-Southern lead to 4-3. UPIKE's scoring run would end there, however, and the Firehawks then scored ten of the next thirteen points. UT-Southern would go on to take the first set. Five different Bears recorded a kill in the first set, led by Cheyenne Martinez and Oksana Vucetic with two kills each.
UT-Southern came out firing in the second set and scored ten of the first twelve points. The Bears were unable to put any scoring runs together and dropped the second set. Marianna Negron Cordero led UPIKE in kills in the second set with five.
Trailing 4-2 in the third set, juniors Cheyenne Martinez and Daniela Hernandez ignited the Bears bench with back-to-back kills to tie it. Later on in the set, Cheyenne Martinez recorded another kill and senior Mikela Cook followed it up with a service ace to cut the Firehawk lead to 11-10. The Firehawks would then score eight of the next ten points to go up 19-12. UPIKE responded by scoring three of the next four points following a block by Oksana Vucetic. Despite trailing 20-15, the Bears players exhibited great energy. The teams traded the next four points after kills from Cheyenne Martinez and Oksana Vucetic. Vucetic would record the final UPIKE point of the set and the Firehawks took the match 3-0.
Junior Cheyenne Martinez led UPIKE in kills (6) and assists (12). Martinez's six kills were the most she has had since September 10th when she recorded a season-high seven against KCU. Oksana Vucetic led the Bears with three blocks and added five kills against the Firehawks. Kiara Warrens twelve digs led UPIKE's defense, followed by Mikela Cook with eight.
UPIKE will finish off this three-game homestand Tuesday night against the University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) at UPIKE Gym. Tuesday's match will be the second meeting this season between the Patriots and Bears, with the Patriots winning the first meeting back on September 8th.
