Henderson, Tenn. - The (RV) University of Pikeville Bears traveled to central Tennessee to take on the Freed-Hardeman Lions and lost 67-63 in overtime.
Mary Englert scored the Bears' first six points and then Bailey Frazier connected from three to give UPIKE a 9-3 lead midway through the first. Englert and Frazier combined for 15 of the Bears' 17 first-quarter points and UPIKE held a 17-9 advantage after one.
Freed-Hardeman opened up the second quarter on an 8-2 run, cutting the UPIKE lead down to 19-17. Morgan Stamper and Sierra Feltner connected on back-to-back jump shots and stretched the lead to 23-17. Stamper added four more points before the half and the Bears took a 27-21 lead to the locker room. The Bears only scored ten second-quarter points, six of which came from Stamper, who also had five rebounds.
Mary Englert began the second half the same way she began the first; by getting the Bears' first points. Englert then hit a three to give the Bears a 37-27 lead in the third. The Lions battled back, cutting the Bears' lead to five by the end of the quarter. Englert had 12 points, five rebounds and two assists in the third quarter.
The Lions cut the lead to three just a minute and a half into the fourth quarter. UPIKE answered with a 4-0 run to go up 53-46 with just over six minutes left. FHU then went on a 9-2 run to tie the game with 1:49 remaining in regulation. The teams traded two-point shots but were knotted at 57-57 as the final seconds ticked down.
Freed-Hardeman took their first lead of the game via free throw but the Bears took the lead right back. The Bears' struggled from the field in overtime, with their final four points coming from the free throw line. The Lions would go on to take this one by a final count of 67-63.
Mary Englert had a great performance tonight, leading the team in points (20), rebounds (11) and assists (4). Bailey Frazier had 15 points and Morgan Stamper had 12. Frazier was also tied with Sierra Feltner with two blocks and two steals each. As a team, UPIKE shot 40% from the field but were 2-15 from beyond the arc.
Following tonight's loss, the Bears' record falls to 2-2 (1-1 MSC). The Bears will stay in Tennessee and will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they take on the Bethel Wildcats.
