Pikeville, Ky. - The UPIKE women's basketball team hosted the #20 University of Rio Grande for their 2022-23 home opener and lost 83-73 to the Red Storm.
The first quarter was neck-and-neck from the start. Katie Collopy hit a three late in the first to give the Bears a four-point lead, but Rio Grande closed out the first quarter with a 6-0 run and led 17-15 after one. Sierra Feltner and Morgan Stamper both had four points each. Stamper also grabbed five rebounds in the first quarter.
Trailing early in the second quarter, the Bears kept it close behind layups by Morgan Stamper, Sierra Feltner and Allie Stone. Later on, the Red Storm took a 32-25 lead but Sierra Feltner added a three-pointer to cut the lead to four. Rio Grande then went on a 12-4 run to close out the first half and led 44-32 at the break. Sierra Feltner scored eight points in the second quarter followed by Allie Stone with four. Morgan Stamper had three more points and four more rebounds in the second. UPIKE shot 35% in the first half and was 15% from three.
UPIKE struggled coming out of the half. The Bears only managed four points in the first six minutes of the third quarter, while the Red Storm scored 17. Trailing 61-36 with under four minutes to go in the third, the Bears closed out the quarter on a 11-6 run and trailed 67-47 after three.
UPIKE dominated the fourth quarter, going on a 13-5 run in the first five minutes to get within 13 with 4:56 to go. The Bears' comeback bid was led by Allie Stone, who had 13 points in the final stanza including three consecutive makes from beyond the arc. Unfortunately, the Bears' comeback bid fell short and the Red Storm took this one 83-73. Stone led UPIKE in fourth-quarter scoring with 13 points. Morgan Stamper grabbed another three rebounds and had a pair of steals in the fourth.
Sierra Feltner and freshman Allie Stone led the Bears in scoring with 19 points each tonight. Feltner also had eight rebounds and two blocks. Morgan Stamper was first in rebounds (12) and second in scoring (13). As a team, the Bears shot 38% from the field. The Bears were much better from three-point range in the second half, going 6-13 (46%) to finish at 30% from beyond the arc.
The Bears are back in action Monday evening at the Appalachian Wireless Arena for a matchup with the University of Charleston at 7:00 P.M.
