Pikeville, Ky. - The Bears three-game win streak was snapped tonight with a 78-74 loss to the #24 Cumberlands (Ky.) Patriots.
The Bears and Patriots traded points in the early stages of the first until the Bears broke an 11-11 tie with a 12-0 run. Bailey Frazier had five points during that run and the Bears were collectively 5-5 from the free throw line. With 0:03 left in the first, Mary Englert drained a three from downtown and UPIKE led 26-16 one.
UPIKE continued to put the pressure on UC in the second and led by as many as 13. After the Bears took a 35-22 lead, Cumberlands went on an 8-2 run to get within seven. UC would cut the Bears' second quarter lead to as few as four before halftime, but Bailey Fraizer added a layup at the buzzer and UPIKE led 42-36 at the half.
The third quarter got started with a pair of made free throws by Morgan Stamper to put UPIKE back up by eight. Neither team scored much in the first six minutes of the third, but that was not true of the last four minutes. UPIKE led 49-42 with four minutes to go, but UC responded with a 9-0 run to take the lead. The two teams traded points and at the end of the third, Cumberlands held a narrow 57-56 lead.
Bailey Frazier hit a three to start the fourth quarter and then Mary Englert hit a jumper to give UPIKE a four point lead. A few minutes later, the Bears led by one and hit some key free throws. Morgan Stamper and Sierra Feltner went 2-2 each and UPIKE led 66-61 with just over six minutes left. Cumberlands stormed back with an 11-2 run with 1:44 to go. UC would hold on to take this one 78-74.
Bailey Frazier led the Bears in scoring for the second consecutive game with 18 points. Frazier also finished with nine rebounds, three blocks, two steals and two assists. Morgan Stamper had 16 points and led the Bears with 14 rebounds. Right behind Stamper in scoring was Mary Englert who had 15 points, seven rebounds and two steals. UPIKE was led in assists by Hailey Free.
UPIKE's record drops to 5-3 (3-2 MSC) after tonight's loss to Cumberlands. The Bears will return to action on Saturday when they hit the road to face their Mid-South foes from up the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway, the Georgetown College Tigers.
