Pikeville, Ky. - After a close, 62-57 loss the #1 Thomas More on Thursday night, the Bears bounced back with a 71-55 win over Wilberforce at the UPIKE Gym Saturday.
UPIKE's smothering defense showed out in the first quarter of this game. Midway through the first, the Bears held a 9-4 lead before going on an 11-0 run to close out the quarter. Five different Bears scored in the first quarter, with Sierra Feltner leading the way with six points followed by Morgan Stamper with five. UPIKE led Wilberforce 20-4 after the first quarter and held the Bulldogs to just 18% shooting.
UPIKE stretched their lead to 30-13 midway through the second before the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 10. Allie Stone hit a three pointer while Hanna Roberts and Abby Adkins added layups and led the Bears to a 7-2 run to close out the half. Allie Stone had eight points in the second quarter and UPIKE headed to the locker room with a 37-22 lead.
Bailey Frazier started off the third quarter with a three and Mary Englert followed it up with a layup to go back up by 20. Sierra Feltner closed out the third quarter with a layup and the Bears led 62-40 after three quarters. Feltner had eight points and three rebounds in the third quarter.
The Bears only scored nine points in the fourth quarter but held the Bulldogs to shooting 35%. Morgan Stamper had four points and seven rebounds in the fourth quarter. Despite only scoring nine points, the Bears closed out the Bulldogs and won 71-55.
Sierra Feltner led the way for UPIKE with 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Allie Stone had another solid game with 14 points and was 3-7 from beyond the arc. Mary Englert had 13 points and four assists. Morgan Stamper once again led UPIKE with 12 rebounds, half of which were offensive rebounds which set up scoring opportunities. UPIKE held Wilberforce to shooting 39% from the field and forced Bulldog 13 turnovers.
The Bears' 2022-23 record climbs to 7-4 (5-3 MSC) following today's dominant win over the Bulldogs. Coach Clifton Williams' squad will hit the road next weekend for a matchup with Warner University in Lake Wales, Florida.
