Mount Vernon, Ohio - Coach Clifton Williams' UPIKE Bears closed out the 2022 calendar year with a 64-54 win at Mount Vernon Nazarene Thursday afternoon.
UPIKE continued their smothering style of defense against the Cougars today, only allowing two points in the first five minutes of the game. The Bears led by as many as nine points but MVNU made a late push in the final minutes of the first. Morgan Stamper had six points and seven rebounds and the Bears led 19-15 after one quarter.
The Bears continued to be stingy in the second period, holding MVNU to shooting 23% from the field and only allowing eight second-quarter points. Just like the first quarter, UPIKE held the Cougars scoreless through the first five minutes of the second while going on a 7-0 run themselves. Led by 12 first-half points by Morgan Stamper, the Bears took a 32-23 lead into halftime. Stamper also had 11 rebounds in the first half.
Bailey Frazier gave the Bears an early, 35-23 third quarter lead after hitting a three. MVNU got within six late in the quarter, but Hailey Free hit a late jumper to get the lead back to eight. After three quarters, UPIKE held a 47-39 lead at the end of the third quarter. Hannah Roberts had five third-quarter points while Morgan Stamper added four more rebounds.
The Cougars went on a run in the fourth and cut the lead to three with 5:37 left in the game. UPIKE responded with an 8-0 and blanked the Cougars over the next 4:36. Mary Englert had seven points during that run to put the game out of reach. Englert had 11 points in the final quarter.
Englert finished the game with 19 points and five rebounds. Morgan Stamper led the Bears with a season-high 18 rebounds and was second in scoring with 16 points. Allie Stone added ten points off 5-9 shooting. In the Bears' previous two games against Warner and Webber International, the Bears held the lead for long periods of time. Today's matchup at MVNU was no different, with UPIKE leading for 39 minutes and 34 seconds.
With the win, the Bears have now won five of their last six games and their record climbs to 10-4 (5-3 MSC). The Bears will open the New Year with a home conference game against the UT-Southern Firehawks on January 5th at the Appalachian Wireless Arena.
