Baseball Takes Game Two In Walk-Off Fashion; Wrap Up Home Opening Series

Pikeville, KY – Bears baseball wrapped-up a hard faught four-game series with Cleary in epic fashion Saturday afternoon with an extra innings infield walk-off in game two of the double-header. UPIKE fell 11-1 in game one before battling eight innings for a 13-12 victory in game two.

After going 2-2 against the Cougars the bears move their regular season record to 4-6.

Overall, the Bears connected for 32 hits, 26 runs, seven extra-base hits, and 10 stolen bases in the two-day bout. Saturday's game two was the most productive offensively for the Bears as they shot out 15 hits including three doubles and a home run.

Game 1

As was the story on day one, the Bears got off to a slow start on Saturday shown by their .045 batting average in game one. UPIKE managed a single hit in the loss which came from DeMarco Miller who later scored the lone run.

Ryan Ratliff manned the bump and offered 3.2 innings of work, allowing eight runs on nine hits. Ratliff struck out three and walked a pair, making quick work of the second inning where the Cougars went three up, three down. Grayson Harris came in relief and pitched an inning and an out, hurt by errors and a hit which gave up three runs. Ty Yates came in to clean up the final two innings and compiled a solid showing where he allowed just a single hit and struck out two.

Game 2

Game two brought the action in a big way offensively as the two squads combined for 25 hits. The Bears stat sheet featured five who finished with multiple hits, led by Tyler Maynard who went 3-4 and scored a run. Maynard blasted a two-RBI double and also recorded a stolen base. Cam Revolt put a bow on a breakout series, cranking his second homerun of the series with a three RBI blast that put the Bears up 4-0 in the bottom of the first frame. Ryan Sartin and AJ Miller joined Maynard in the doubles club while Freas had a productive 2-5 outing where he scored two runs and brought two runs in. DeMarco Miller made an argument for most impactful play of the game, opening the eighth inning with a triple to deep left field.

A breakout performance came from the arm of Hunter Heath who earned his first career win. Heath relieved Cernohous in the fourth inning and tossed 4.2 innings, holding the Cougars to just a single run, striking out four. The top of the eighth was a lights out three up three down effort which was followed by the Bears gritty game winning half-inning.

UPIKE baseball returns to the diamond on Tuesday, February 15th for a midweek double-header with Johnson University. First pitch of game one in Knoxville is slated for 2PM.
