Brunswick, GA – The University of Pikeville softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday afternoon at the College of Coastal Georgia, 4-3 and 14-9. The Mariners were receiving votes to be ranked in the preseason NAIA Top-25 Coaches' poll. The losses drop the Bears to 1-3 to begin the 2022 season as they return to action next Saturday at home against Union College.
Game 1
The Bears found themselves trailing 3-0 heading into the top of the third inning and in need of some offense. They found it in the form of a two-out rally after the first two batters got out to start the inning.
Sophie Kluesner and
Lillie Kluesner both singled before a
Haleigh Jones single brought a run in to cut the lead to 3-1.
The Mariners scored another run in the bottom of the fourth to retake a three-run lead as the Bears were quieted in the fourth and fifth innings. They made a push in the sixth inning with another two-out rally as
Zoe Ingram laced a double to left field for a pair of RBIs to cut the lead to 4-3, but that was as close as they would get. They had an opportunity to tie it up in the seventh, but the tying run was thrown out at the plate to end the game in heartbreaking fashion.
Mattea Ware struck out five in a complete-game showing.
Game 2
UPIKE found itself down 9-2 in the second game but wouldn't go down without a fight. They loaded the bases in the fifth inning to set up an
Alyssa Franklin two-RBI double to get things rolling and cut it to 9-4. A
Carrie Boyd single knocked in another run before a
Zoey Keeton double brought in two more runs to cut the lead down to 9-7.
Unfortunately, the Mariners answered with two runs of their own in the fifth and took a 14-7 lead into the final frame. Keeton hit her first career homerun with two outs in the seventh, but the Bears couldn't complete the comeback and fell 14-9.
What's Up Next
As mentioned, the Bears return to action next Saturday for their first games of the 2022 season at Paul Butcher Field. They take on the Union College Bulldogs in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. UPIKE will be looking for their first win against Union since the 2015 season.
