UPIKE Downed Twice by St. Francis in Opening Day of Series

Pikeville, KY – Bears baseball dropped a pair of games to Saint Francis (Ind.) Friday afternoon by scores of 10-8 and 4-2. UPIKE threatened late in both games but fell short, hindered by runners left on base.

The Bears drop to 5-9 overall on the season following the losses, with a chance to bounce back in two games against the Cougars on Saturday.

Game 1

Opening the series with a start in game one was Ty Crall who hurled three innings complete. The Ohian allowed five earned runs on six hits and struck out four. Grayson Harris offered a solid four innings of relief and closed the game with a career high seven strikeouts. Harris allowed a pair of earned runs and seven hits.

After the cougars struck for two runs and four hits in the top half of the first, the Bears answered with two runs of their own. Ryan Sartin shot a single up the middle to spark the offense and was scored later by Cam Revolt via a double scorched down the right field line. Revolt would strike again in the bottom of the fourth, reaching on a double before being brought in by a base hit from Noah Helton.

Trailing 10-4, the Bears came into the bottom of the seventh with energy and scored four runs but couldn't close the gap. Tyler Freas and Tyler Maynard both knocked RBI singles in the inning.

Game 2

After a breakout relief performance in a win over Cleary last week, freshman Hunter Heath got the call to start in game two. The Winchester, KY native tossed four innings, giving up four runs on five hits and striking out three. Nolan Fernandes pitched the last three innings and gave up just a single hit, no runs, and sat four down on strikes.

After a single run inning in the first aided by a wild pitch, Saint Francis stayed quiet until the third where they picked up three more. The Bears woke the bats up in the third, thanks to a triple by Freas who was crossed on the next at-bat by Sartin.

The fourth inning saw the Bears load the bases after three consecutive hits from Eduardo Bello, DeMarco Miller, and Jared Kirkman. Greg Lile was called on to pitch hit but was retired on strikes before Freas grounded out to end the inning.
Kirkman tagged his second hit of the ball game in the sixth which scored Bello which would be the Bears final run.

The Bears are set for games three and four at Johnnie LeMaster tomorrow, February 19th starting at 12PM.
