Pikeville, KY – The Bears faced UT-Southern in double header action on Friday, winning game one 5-4 before dropping game two 5-1 to split the double-header.
Game 1
All but the sixth inning belonged to the Bears in the opening contest, leading almost the entire contest until a big sixth frame from the Firehawks made things close. Led by Cernohous, the Bears held on in the final inning to win the game.
Jairemy Pulido got the call to start in the opener, offering up 5.1 innings and allowing four runs on six hits. It would be Fernandes and Cernohous that would tag-team the win/save combo, with the former relieving in the sixth to finish out the inning. Cerno fired 23 pitches in the final frame and held the Firehawks scoreless to secure the win.
At the plate it was
Tyler Freas and
Tyler Maynard that led production, each knocking a pair of hits. Freas' first hit came on a stellar bunt single down the rf line and he would later score on a sac fly by Maynard which gave the Bears a three run lead in the third. Maynard collected his second RBI on the day in the sixth frame, scoring
Demarco Miller on a single which would prove to be the winning run.
Cam Revolt added to his double count with a shot to left-center in the third which scored
Noah Helton. Helton finished with an RBI single and a run scored while Sartin went 1-3 and also walked.
Game 2
The second contest was a different story for both teams, who would remain scoreless through the first three innings of play. UT-Southern got on the board first, scratching a pair of runs in the fourth inning before adding damage with three more runs in the sixth.
Jared Kirkman tagged the only base-hit for the Bears in the first three innings, before
Noah Helton stepped to the plate and busted a triple to deep-center in the fourth. An RBI walk from
AJ Miller would be the only scoring production for the Bears in the contest.
