Franklin Hits Walkoff; UPIKE Splits With WVU-Tech

Pikeville, KY – The University of Pikeville softball team split their doubleheader Thursday afternoon against West Virginia Tech. They took game one 4-3 on a walk-off double by Alyssa Franklin before dropping the second game 5-0.

Franklin had three hits to lead UPIKE during the day with two doubles and an RBI. Carrie Boyd and Lillie Kluesner both had a pair of hits during the doubleheader. Boyd had two RBI and Jamie Pollard also had an RBI. The Bears move to 4-8 overall this season and return to the field on Sunday afternoon at Montreat College.

How It Happened
The Golden Bears took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning in the opening game. UPIKE had runners in scoring position in the first two frames, but couldn't drive anyone home. This changed in the third inning where the Bears found themselves with runners on second and third with just one out. Boyd brought both runners home and cut the lead to 3-2.

A Pollard RBI double in the bottom of the fourth tied the game at 3-3. Later on, Mattea Ware worked out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the seventh inning to give the Bears a chance to walk it off. They did just that after Lillie Kluesner singled and Boyd got hit before Franklin brought the winning run home with a drive off the left center field fence, giving UPIKE the 4-3 win.

UPIKE struggled offensively in the final game, recording four hits. They had a runner in scoring position in three innings, but never got anyone past second base in their 5-0 loss.

What's Up Next
As mentioned, the Bears travel to Black Mountain, N.C. for their next pair of games with Montreat College on Sunday afternoon. Game one is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
