Mullins Shutout Highlights Bears Day At WVU Tech

Beckley, WV – The University of Pikeville softball team split a pair of games on the road Wednesday afternoon with the West Virginia Tech Golden Bears. They lost game one 6-0 and won game two 2-0 behind a great performance in the circle from sophomore Katlyn Mullins. This moves the Bears to 11-21 overall this season heading into a weekend series with Shawnee State.

Game One
The Golden Bears took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third in game one and never looked back.

Senior Taylor Dickerson held the Bears to just two hits in the game and four runners in scoring position, with no one making it past second base. Zoe Ingram and Carrie Boyd provided the hits for UPIKE in the 6-0 defeat.

Game Two
The Bears flipped the script on West Virginia Tech in the final game, as Mullins allowed just five hits with no walks in a complete game 2-0 shutout. The Golden Bears had only three runners in scoring position in the game. This is Mullins second shutout of the season with the other coming at home against Miami-Hamilton on Mar. 17.

UPIKE had nine hits in the game, with a pair coming from Kendall Hillard, Haleigh Jones, and Amber Triplett. Boyd got the scoring started with an RBI single in the top of the third for her second hit of the day while Jones also poked a single to center field for an RBI in the same inning. Ingram recorded her second hit of the day, while Mary Oxford also had a hit.

What's Up Next
UPIKE returns to Paul Butcher Field on Friday afternoon for a doubleheader with the Shawnee State Bears beginning at 2:00 p.m. Last season, Shawnee State beat UPIKE three out of four times.
