Baseball Drops Game One at Shawnee State

Portsmouth, OH – Despite opening the game with a four run inning to take the lead, Bears baseball fell on the road 16-6 Friday to Shawnee State. The Bears were hindered by eight runners left on base.

Ty Crall got the start and went five innings, giving up 11 runs (10E) on 15 hits. Jacob Hawkins relieved in the sixth and allowed a pair of runs before Cody Morton closed the game.

Eduardo Bello hung a new season high with three hits in the contest, tagging three singles and scoring twice. Tyler Freas went 1-5, taking the team lead with his eighth double of the season. Anthony Houk knocked a two-RBI double and also walked twice. Tyler Maynard scored a pair of runs and had an RBI single, finishing 1-4.

Freas reached base on an error to lead off what would be a four run inning in the first, advancing two more bases on the same play via errors from SSU. Freas scored on the fourth straight error by the Bears as Noah Helton put the ball in play to right. Maynard singled on the next at bat, crossing Helton and two at-bats later scored on a passed ball. Anthony Houk sent a SAC fly to right to score Bello and put UPIKE up 4-0.

Crall stifled SSU in the bottom of the first with a three up three down inning that included two groundouts and a flyout. Neither team scored again until a big inning by SSU in the third tied the game. Shawnee took the lead in the fourth with a three run inning on four hits, one of which was a three-run homer.

SSU added four more in the 5th, knocking five hits, followed by two more in the sixth to make it 13-4. UPIKE finally answered with a pair of runs in the seventh but couldn't overcome the SSU lead.

Bears baseball looks to bounce back tomorrow, April 2nd in a double-header with SSU. First pitch of game one is slated for 12:00 PM.
