Black Mountain, NC – UPIKE men's soccer defeated Montreat 1-0 on Thursday evening, recording the program's first win over the Cavaliers.
Richard Wohl fired the winning goal for the Bears in the 84
th minute.
The Bears open the season 1-0, avenging their last season opening loss against Montreat back in 2019 in a game that went double OT.
Montreat blistered the net in the first half, recording 10 shots as Bears keeper
Adam Di Millo held off the attack. UPIKE managed a pair of shots on goal in the first 45 minutes, coming by way of
Thivesh Naiker and
Isak Nesse.
Locked at 0-0, the final 30 minutes of play grew more intense as Di Millo would ward off another pair of shots.
Daron Baumann fired at the net in the 78
th minute and was blocked before Naiker would once again place a ball on frame, which was saved by the keeper.
Just over a minute later, the Bears found themselves on the attack once more. With just 6:18 remaining in the game,
Anthony Aguilar offered up a well executed pass which was fired in by Wohl for the game winning goal.
Bears men's soccer return to the pitch on Wednesday, August 31
st for their home debut against Midway. The match is slated for 4:00 PM at Bob Amos Grass Field and will be live streamed via the
UPIKE Sports Network.
